Have a 2006 Mitsubishi Endeavor, rear driver's side window rolled down on it's own. ?

The window dropped down without the help of the window motor. Now the motor will run but the window will not go up. I can slide the window up and down but the motor does nothing. Also, attempted to get door panel off but was afraid i might break something (it is my wife's vehicle). Is there some sort of trick to getting the door panel off? Do I really need those special clip-popping tools? Is this something a shade-tree mechanic can fix? Any help would be appreciated!
