My friend just came down with a rare infection that is likely the result of undiagnosed HIV. How can I help?
So my friend is in the hospital, and he has an infection. It's the type of infection that you usually only get when you have HIV, and he has had unprotected . I have no idea what to do. I'm so scared for him. When we talk on the phone, or I visit him, I have no idea if I should be avoiding talking about the obvious (until it's 100% certain). But I'm 95% certain it's HIV. Can I call a counselor? Should I call an advocacy group? Do I need to give him his time instead of bombarding him with options? He won't get an HIV test right now because he's scared about insurance consequences, which neither he nor I understand. He's not going to die... but his life is going to be so much harder. How do I be a good friend? Should I back off? He doesn't even know yet, but it's a rare type of infection and generally only people with compromised immune systems are vulnerable. I'm sort of freaking out too because I'm scared and should I try to hide this from him? Advice needed. Thanks.
