What's Virtual Villagers?

Say, I've seen a lot of questions about Virtual Villagers and I was wondering, WHAT IS IT??? Is it a cool website, or is it a game you buy? I want an answer that tells me what it is, how I can get it, if it's fun, and what you do in it. And I don't want to just hear "You control virtual villagers!"
